Who can resist a cupcake? This scrummy-looking crochet pincushion features strawberry pink ‘icing’ with a golden brown cake base. Topped with a swirl of cream and a cherry on top, it’s good enough to eat.

Essential Kit
Yarn: brown, pink, cream
Mercerised cotton: red, green
Crochet hooks: 2.75mm , 3.5mm
Toy stuffing
Foam for base
Blunt-ended needle

Cupcake Pincushion
Base
Use a stitch marker in first st in each rnd
Using 3.5mm hook and Brown, ch2, 6dc in second st from hook. Six dc
Rnd 1: 2dc in each st. 12 dc
Rnd 2: (dc in next st, 2dc in next st) six times. 18 dc
Rnd 3: (dc in next 2 sts, 2dc in next st) six times. 24 dc
Rnd 4: (dc in next 3 sts, 2dc in next st) six times. 30 dc
Rnd 5: (dc in next 4 sts, 2dc in next st) six times. 36 dc
Fasten off

Side
Using 3.5mm hook and Brown, ch10, dc in second st from hook, dc in each ch, ch1, turn
Row 1: front post dc in all sts, ch1, turn
Row 2: dc in all sts, ch1, turn
Rep Rows 1-2 until the side measures the same as the perimeter of the base

Top
Using 3.5mm hook and Pink, ch2, 6dc in second st from hook. Six dc
Working in the back loop only of all sts, work as follows:
Rnd 1: 2dc in each st. 12 dc
Rnd 2: (dc in next st, 2dc in next st) six times, mark this place with a stitch marker. 18 dc
Rnd 3: (dc in next 2 sts, 2dc in next st) six times. 24 dc
Rnd 4: (dc in next 3 sts, 2dc in next st) six times. 30 dc
Rnd 5: (dc in next 4 sts, 2dc in next st) six times. 36 dc
Rnd 6: dc in all sts
Rnd 7: dc in all sts, ch1, turn
Do not break yarn
Icing top stitching: with Pink sl st in front loop of all sts to marker placed on Rnd 3
Change to Cream
Working into front loop only of rem sts, (htr, tr, htr) in each st until the first round, then (htr, tr, htr) into the side of sts in first rnd
Fasten off

Cherry
Using 2.75mm hook and Red, ch2, 6dc in second st from hook. Six dc
Rnd 1: 2dc in each st. 12 dc
Rnd 2: (dc in next st, 2dc in next st) six times. 18 dc
Rnd 3: dc in all sts
Rnd 4: (dc2tog) six times
Stuff
Rnd 6: (dc2tog) three times
Gather sts to close

Stem
Using 2.75mm hook and Green, ch10, sl st in each ch
Fasten off

Leaf
The leaf is worked around the first 7 chain sts
Using 2.75mm hook and Green, ch7
Working through top loops of chs, sl st to top loop of second st from hook, dc, htr, tr, htr, 2dc in first ch, then working up other side of chs work htr, tr, htr, dc, slip st to first slip st
Fasten off, leaving long tail

To make up
Attach Base to Side before joining back seam. Sew Stem and Leaf to Cherry and attach to Top. Weave in ends to reverse. Insert foam into Base and stuff. Pin Top to Sides. Join Cream yarn to seam and attach Top to Side

Cream edging
With Top facing, ch2, tr, htr in same st, (dc in next st, htr, tr, htr in next st) around, sl st to first ch
You may need to adjust sts as you ease sides in
Make sure cake is fully stuffed before finishing off join
